BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - With the thermometer sitting in the low single digits and wind chills dropping the air temperature to around -20, many parents were surprised to learn their children had school today.
Some people made the decision not to let their children wait for the bus Tuesday morning with a code blue in effect.
Parents who normally don’t drive their kids to school every day, had no other choice.
Nancy Stutzman who wanted schools closed today said, “I think it's unfair, I really do. A lot of parents are driving their child, that’s the only way to go today. It's really too cold for the little children. The teenagers, they can handle it; but the little kids, they don't know.”
We contacted several school districts about why they remained open but kept being referred to the New York Statewide School Health Services Center guidelines for the consideration of school closures which reads:
"No one should be outside with wind-chill factors of -40ºF."
It also states:"As we are approaching wind chills of -25ºF, it may be time to consider either closure or later arrival especially for elementary children".
Remember to go to check for any closings on our website under the Weather Tab.
