SPENCERPORT, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities are investigating the apparent accidental drowning of a 20-year-old Orleans County man found in the Erie Canal.

Police in the Monroe County town of Ogden say a passer-by spotted Michael Vyrvoss of Kendall in the canal Monday afternoon in the village of Spencerport, just west of Rochester.

He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities say Vyrvoss was a student at the Board of Cooperative Educational Services school located near the canal and had left the building around 1 p.m. Monday.

BOCES officials say they're investigating.
