PEMBROKE, NY (WIVB) - Pembroke has been reportedly selected as the preferred site for a new national veterans cemetery in western New York.
The Buffalo News reports that negotiations are underway for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to purchase a 132 acre parcel of land at Route 77 and Indian Falls Road in the Town of Pembroke.
Another property that has been under consideration is in Lancaster.
Sen. Charles Schumer said, "Western New York is one of the few places in the U.S. without a veterans cemetery, and our citizens in the Rochester area had to drive all the way to Bath if they wanted to pay their respects to a loved one who was buried, a veteran at the cemetery there, so we pushed hard for a cemetery in Western New York."
Veterans organizations have been pushing for a long time to establish a veterans cemetery in WNY since the closest one is in Bath, Steuben County.
