PERRY, NY (WIVB) - A former Rochester Police Department captain has fatally shot and killed his son after apparently mistaking him for an intruder. Michael Leach, 59, called police immediately to say he had shot an intruder, not knowing it was actually his son.
Leach is now serving as a part-time police officer in Perry, NY after retiring as a captain with the Rochester Police Department.
New York State Police say he fatally shot his 34 year-old son, Matthew Leach, at the Clark Beach Motel at 12:51 a.m. Saturday.
Police say Michael Leach suffered a medical incident following the incident and was taken to St. Lukes Hospital in Utica.
The Rochester Police issued the following statement:
The Rochester Police Department wishes to express its deepest sympathy to the Leach family over the tragic loss of Matthew Leach. The Rochester Police Department will defer any comment on this sad event to the investigating authorities. We ask that everyone keep the Leach family in their thoughts and prayers.
