BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Priest, author, mentor, that's how Father John Sturm is being remembered Tuesday morning. The east side native and long time teacher at Canisius High School passed away at the age of 95.
The sign outside of Canisius High School remembers Father John Sturm with “Rest in Peace” in Latin. The 95-year-old priest passed away Saturday.
Father Sturm, a 1935 graduate of Canisius High School, later worked as a prefect of discipline at the school from 1952 until 1970. Near the end of this time, he became close with a student at Canisius, the pride of Buffalo, Tim Russert.
Russert said that he learned how to act like a gentleman from Father Sturm. He also said he considered Father John one of his mentors that was most influential in shaping his lifetime values. Father Sturm was also a published author.
Calling hours are Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Amigone Funeral Home on Delaware Avenue near West Ferry.
