BUFFALO, N.Y (WIVB) - Re-Tree Western New York had a busy day this afternoon plating over 1,000 trees through the city and suburbs.
South Park Avenue received 60 of those trees for a two mile stretch from Bailey to almost Lackawanna.
Paul Maurer from Re-Tree WNY says, "This is a planting we did two years ago, but we had some storms and some damage over that time. We are bringing back some UB kids from the Circle K Club to help up. Crews from the city and all of our Re-Tree volunteers jumping in and reforesting this whole area."
The trees come from Western New York grown at select tree farm which was contracted out by Re-Tree.
Different species are chosen by arborists based on the location and the area. They also use a variety of trees in case of disease.
Many, many years ago, there was a Dutch Elm disease in the 50's and 60's. They planted all Elm species along the streets and they were all lost at once. The disease can jump from tree to tree and we try to bury it with different type of species," said Maurer.
The locations for the trees are based on volunteers. As long as there is a group of three volunteers, they can apply for tree planting through Re-Tree and as long as there continues to be donations, they will distribute trees.
