Ready your car for bitter cold temps

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - As western New York gets ready to get hit with an Arctic blast, it's a good time to make sure your car is in shape and you have a stash of emergency supplies.

Tuesday is forecasted to bring bitter cold temperatures and snow to some areas. AAA officials say before an emergency hits make sure your the battery in your vehicle is checked by a qualified mechanic.

AAA Fleet Operations Manager Dan Walter said, "Battery life averages about three to five years and you want to make sure its has adequate cranking ramps to start your vehicle when it's cold."

When it gets really cold, it's also important to have blankets, water and an emergency roadside kit in your vehicle. The kits come with everything from batteries and jumper cables to an emergency help sign.

Walter also says before you drive, it's crucial to check your tire pressure. And if your vehicle will be sitting outside for a long period of time, he says starting your vehicle for five or 10 minutes isn't enough.

"What you really want to do is take it out for a little 10, 15 minute ride to ensure that the charging system of the battery fully charges up the battery," Walter said.

When the winter winds blow, it's always best to stay inside. But even being nice and cozy in your home can lead to problems.

Use fireplaces, wood stoves or other combustion heaters only if they are properly vented to the outside. And don't place a space heater within three feet of anything that may catch on fire, such as drapes, furniture or bedding. And remember to turn it off.

Former Kenmore Fire Chief Felix Coniglio said, "People figure they can keep their house warm at night and they leave their portable heaters on and that's not a good thing to do. It can start a fire."
