Shooting, brawl shake up neighborhood

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Neighbors are shaken and nervous about a violent weekend in Buffalo’s University District. There were two separate but violent incidents that happened in Saturday morning, just a half hour apart from one another. People who live in the area say they want police to do more.

A shooting occurred at Main Street and Minnesota Avenue, overnight into Saturday . Many patrons were inside Broadway Joe's when they heard gunshots.

University District resident Heather Stack said, “There's just no police doing anything. People were running, screaming, people are getting maced, pepper sprayed, everything going on outside and no cops were outside doing anything.”

After the initial shots were fired, more rang out about an hour and half later according to Mike Deitz.

Deitz said, “They shut the doors here and locked them. They got everyone that was here inside and they said we can't leave just to protect us. That's frightening.”

Mike also says police officers never responded to the first wave of gunfire. They did swarm the area after the second round. He says it should have been addressed earlier.

Deitz said, “I just want to see more of a police presence around here. I want to feel comfortable leaving my vehicle here or being comfortable standing outside having a conversation with somebody, without someone walking by and shooting me or a fight breaking out two feet away and I get caught in the middle of it.”

Also over the weekend, two UB wrestlers were arrested for assault . According to police, 20-year old sophomore Justin Lozano and his former teamate, 22-year old Clayton Reed were found punching and kicking another man. The victim suffered multiple facial injuries according to police.

For University District residents, these types of violent crimes are happening too often.

Resident Lorna Loster said, “I have to watch my back because i have kids at home and I'm afraid one day mommy's not going to come home and I don't want that just because I just came out to see a band or something.”

According to Buffalo Police, they regularly patrol the area, especially during the weekends. They say the sometimes officers may not be seen by the public.

No arrests have been made in the shooting. Police are continuing to investigate.
