BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - As Buffalonians get wind that Bass Pro is no longer coming to the Canal Side, they're also getting ideas about what could work in its place.

Sally Sams of Cheektowaga said, "I think they need something for the whole public like Ikea."

"Maybe some boutique type shops," added another resident.

Steve Marcel of Grand Island said, "Why not really take advantage of the great water front. Why not more entertainment for boaters more of an attraction so people come here."

Maybe the sporting goods store never really seemed like a good fit for the Queen City. Representatives from Bass Pro say public opinions weren't all that welcoming.

Eric Recoon of Benderson Development said, "Bass Pro is a private company. They're frankly not accustomed to all this negativity. The negativity here became very toxic."

Here's what some of you had to say on our News 4 Facebook Page:
John writes: "I say they make it into a bunch of restaurants and stuff, fun for all ages you know?"
Corey says:"In ten years we will still be looking at an empty lot. No one wants to come here because of too many stupid politicians and too many groups who file lawsuits over every little thing.
One question still remains, will the 35 millions dollars in public resources stay committed to building up the canal side?"

Saturday morning News 4 spoke to Democrat Assemblyman Sam Hoyt. He says ideally he will meet with Gov. Paterson to make sure that money stays here in Buffalo.

Western New Yorkers are just eager to move forward.

Sally Sams of Cheektowaga said, "Just get over it, Buffalo needs to do something on the waterfront."
