BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) - David Rutecki, a former Buffalo Common Council member and executive with M&T Bank, died of a stroke while visiting family in New York City.

Rutecki, 64 was Council Chief of Staff for six years.  He was elected to the North District seat in the city council in 1983.  He left for a job in the banking industry and became vice president at M&T Bank, working on the bank’s relationship with local communities.

Mayor Byron Brown today issued this statement upon learning of Rutecki's death, “David Rutecki is someone who loved Buffalo deeply,” said Mayor Byron Brown. “He was a civic and business leader who devoted a great deal of his life to public service.  He had a brilliant mind for government and business and was very generous with me over the years in providing advice on a whole host of subjects.  He will be sorely missed.  ‘May God bless him and his family.”

Rutecki was in New York for the birth of his first grandson at the time of his death.
