BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A new era of education is dawning in Buffalo, as the brand new West Buffalo Charter School opens its doors for the very first time today.

Principal Andrea Todoro said, “I can't wait to meet the students and see all of their families.”

Monday, 162 students will start their first day of school at a new institution, the West Buffalo Charter School. Over the weekend, the principal, teachers and volunteers worked together to get the building and classrooms ready for students.

Second grade teacher Shawn Siddall said, “Bringing in supplies for the kids, books, my teacher supplies, hanging up posters, getting the rug ready, desks organized.”

Todoro said, “It’s a group effort. We have a large group of family members and extended family members that are all pitching in and putting in effort making sure the building is ready.”

The new charter school is focused on literacy. Their goal is to make sure students, from kindergarten to the second grade, have reading skills are at or above their grade level.

So Monday morning, many students and teachers are getting ready to start a new school year.

Siddall said, “I am very excited. Very excited. Like I said. I'm a little nervous too. But I am always, no matter if it's you're first year or your 10th year.”
