ASHVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - Emergency crews in a western New York town are being credited with saving a horse from a frozen creek.
Lakewood Firefighters report that a horse belonging to some Amish workers was tethered to a tree when he broke loose Tuesday afternoon and wandered onto the ice on Goose Creek in the hamlet of Ashville.
The horse, named "Shorty", fell through the ice and was submerged up to his eyes and nose. Chief Kurt Hallberg of the Lakewood Fire Department says firefighters were able to get ropes underneath the horse and pull him to safety after about a half hour in the frigid water.
Shorty suffered a broken tooth and numerous scratches but is expected to recover.
