Sister Karen's legacy of peace lives on

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Peace. Nonviolence. Giving people a second chance.

That's what Sister Karen Klimczak fought for and died for.

The Catholic nun was killed five years ago, by a parolee she was assisting at Buffalo's Bissonette House, a halfway house on the City's east side.

Director of "Peaceprints" Jim Haid said,"If an individual is released from prison whatever prison that might be."

"If they are just taking a grey hound bus and dropped off at the bus station, there is a 70% chance that without a support group of some sort, that within three years they will end up back on the insid," added Haid.

Sister Karen was committed to making sure that didn't happen.

Saturday, at Peaceprints Prison Ministries, Sister Karen and the 49 people killed in Buffalo in the past year were remembered.

"I lost two children to the City of Buffalo. This lady right here taught me to how to hold my head up high, walk tall and be proud and to try and do thing to make peace with one another," added Jacqueline Wells.

In Sister Karen's memory, dozens of fed up community members united to stop the violence during a peace walk, along Grider Street which as been dedicated as Sister Karen Klimczak's way.

Brandon Louis said, "I'm tired of the violence. I lost three of my uncles and my father to this. And i'm getting tired of this so if all of you hear me, stop it, stop."
