ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) - With between two and six inches falling in the southtowns Wednesday, residents are wishing the first day of spring felt more like spring.

John Shaw of Springville said, “I’m ready to get back in my wood shed. I’m ready to get outside. I can’t even get the dog out to go for a walk.”

Early Wednesday morning on Route 219, drivers experienced slippery roads and white-out conditions. The windy weather and cold temperatures are makings it a day for western New Yorkers to bundle up before heading outside.

“Some of my flowers have already started to come up, and now I can’t see them. But it’s western New York, I guess this is what you get. Florida is coming, we go to Florida in a couple of days and I can’t wait. But this is pretty,” said Holly Jean of Springville.

In Orchard Park, it was cold winds that greeted residents as they went outdoors Wednesday.

Dolores Whistler, of Orchard Park, shared her thoughts on the first day of spring. She said, “We’re hoping the second day is much better. My husband reminded me that Punxsutawney Phil is a fable. We had hope.

“This is probably better than normal, this winter. So take it and run,” said Art Whistler of Orchard Park.
