NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) - Someone is shooting hawks in Niagara County and now several agencies are offering rewards for information that leads them to the shooter.

A red-tailed hawk that had been shot was discovered on Green Road in Cambria on July 13.  The bird died while under the care of a wildlife rehabilitator.  A Coopers hawk was found a few days later on Ruie Road in North Tonawanda.

The Humane Society and its Society Wildlife Land Trust are offering two  rewards of $2,500 each for information on those responsible.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation considers hawks an endangered species. Shooting a hawk also is a federal offense, a violation of the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

Anyone with tips should contact U.S. Fish & Wildlife Agent Lee Schneckenberger at 691-3635, ext. 202. Callers may remain anonymous.
