WEST SENECA, N.Y. (WIVB) - Many ceremonies both large and small were held throughout Western New York Sunday honoring those who past and presently serve for our country.
At Veteran's Park in West Seneca, it wasn't only about those who served abroad. Members of the Gold Star Mothers, who had a son or daughter fall in combat were honored for their service and sacrifice with a plaque that will sit with many more monuments near the American Legion Post.
Gold Star Mother, Holly Baker says, "It's their special day and they choose today to honor us, and that's quite an honor. I feel very humbled an honored that they would do that for us today. We have a very special bond an only another mother would understand what we go through."
In Buffalo, hundreds came to honor veteran's at Forest Lawn Cemetery where more than 10-thousand soldiers are buried from wars dating back to the Revolutionary War.
The Erie County Commander who fought in Vietnam, says the Veteran's Day should be about honoring those that fought for our country who are still with us.
Many veterans say they can't help but think of those that didn't come home.
Commander at Erie County American legion, Peter Hurd says, "I have friends that didn't come home, all veterans do that were in at that period of time. Whether you were fighting in the jungles in Vietnam or you were on an aircraft carrier, it didn't make a difference; you had friend that died. When you see a veteran, thank them for their service. That's all we ask; we don't ask for anything but thanks for our service. And when you see the sea of flags here today, you know how many sacrificed in order for us to be here."
And a big thank you all of the veteran's here in Western New York certainly received today.
