BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - It may seem like a great time to head on the ice now that the temperatures are back to what WNY is used to, but Coast Guards think otherwise.
Although the weather is sunny and warming up, The U. S. Coast Guards are warning everyone the ice can be very unpredictable. When ice freezes quickly, as it did this weekend, it doesn't have enough time to form as solid as people think it might be.
U.S. Coast Guard Blake Caraballo said, "The ice did freeze very quickly so it doesn't give it time to form and become as solid as people might think. It's also warming up here which is going to weaken the ice."
On Saturday, two members of the Coast Guard fell through the ice while trying to warn fisherman it may not be safe enough.
"Everyday we're out we typically do fall through. There's soft patches of ice everywhere and every step you take can be different," said Caraballo.
The U. S. Coast Guard said Sunday's ice at the Small Boat Harbor was only measuring from 3 to 8 inches with some spots even thinner than that.
For those going out on the ice, they are reminded to wear a life jacket and shoes that grip well. Also, they are advised to bring a metal spike to check the ice in front of them while walking out, as well as carry a whistle with them just in case.
When fishing with a group people, Caraballo said, "Be aware of where your weight is if you are with multiple people. It's good to be 15 feet away from each other so all your weight is not in one general location."
Fisherman Kevin Groves is happy he's finally getting some ice fishing in this season. He says he still feels safe even though the ice is thin is some spots. "...I wouldn't come out alone if no one else was here," he said.
More advice to anyone planning on going onto the ice during the rest of the winter season is to dress in warm clothing to prevent hypothermia such as a waterproof exposure suit. Also, bring a couple of screwdrivers that may come in handy if someone falls through the ice.
