BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A hockey player from Canisius College received devastating news after finding out he had leukemia. But, with a positive attitude he started helping other kids and even got back on the ice.
Chris Rumble said he has always wanted to be a hockey player when he grew up. After high school, he played defense for the Wenatchee Wild Amateur Hockey Team and two years later, his dream of a college hockey scholarship came true.
Months later in April 2012, Rumble noticed his glands were swollen and his energy level was low.
He was then diagnosed with cancer. "I knew leukemia was a form of cancer. I kind of feel like I had a thousand pounds on my shoulder as I just kind of sunk into my seat. One of the first questions I asked was "how long till I play hockey again?" he said.
Rumble was determined to play again and approached his 6 months of brutal chemotherapy with a positive attitude.
"The worst day of pain was during round four and my large intestine ruptured. So I wasn't allowed to eat for fourteen days or drink."
The 22-year-old was a patient at Seattle Children's Hospital where he took comfort in being a role model for the younger ones and tried cheering them up with another passion of his-making music videos.
His new friends on the cancer ward were the stars of a video he made that went viral and received millions of hits.
Just 6 months ago, Rumble was still in the hospital. Now, his cancer is in remission and he is back on the ice again this time as a Freshman playing defense for the Canisius Golden Griffins.
"There were a couple points during my treatment where I didn't think I would ever make it back on the ice let alone division one college hockey," he said.
