Students hit streets for SABAH

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Students at a local Catholic school are lacing up their sneakers and hitting the street for a good cause.

Holy Angels Academy is certainly doing its part in making sure the blind and handicapped are getting the attention they deserve. Each year the academy raises money for the Skating Athletes Bold At Heart, or also known as SABAH.

News 4’s Al Vaughters, who is on the board for the program, started things off with the squeeze of an air horn. About a 20 minute walk, or light jog, began. Also attending this year was Sabertooth.

With the Sabres in a lockout and the season opener canceled, the team’s mascot was able to join the walk. A walk that organizers say is the product of a tight-knit community.

Executive Director of SABAH Sheila O’Brien said, “The Holy Angels and SABAH have had a long history of a great relationship together and we’re so grateful every year that they do this and there’s such a sense of giving back to the community, and I think that’s what Holy Angels is all about.”

The Sabres, who are very involved in this program, we’re told have donated the old Buffalo Bandits’ turf the turf to the academy so once the skates get put away the school can play more sports.
