Students learn from athletes' tweets

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A local teacher is pushing punctuation in a whole new way. In fact, his lesson plan is now getting national attention. It sounds harsh, but if you ever thought that your second grader might be smarter than a pro athlete, one teacher at Elmwood Franklin School has proof that it might be true.

Mark Saldanha was scrolling through his own Twitter feed one day, when he couldn't help but notice the poor grammar and spelling of some very well known athletes. He thought to himself, “my second graders could do better than that.”

Saldanha printed out some of the worst offending tweets, put his students into groups, and let them make their corrections. They caught every spelling, punctuation, and capitalization error.

Mark was so proud he posted the photos on the Elmwood Franklin Facebook page. That's when sports blogs and national media started picking the story up.

Some people think that Mark's class may be unfairly targeting pro athletes, so he has said that he may use tweets from politicians or other newsworthy people in the future. His main goal is to remind people to spell check before they post anything online.
