BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A group of eight senators including 4 democrats and four republicans believe their immigration plan can pass where others have failed.

Spokesperson for the Association of Immigration Lawyers said, “It’s tough but fair, it definitely takes a hard look at the 11 million estimated illegal immigrants in our country and comes up with some viable solutions for how to deal with that population.”

The bottom line is she supports the push for reformation from the bi-partisan committee.

Senator Charles Schumer said, “We believe this will be the year congress finally gets it done.”

Their plan would grant illegal immigrants temporary legal status where they’d stay in the country if they pass a criminal background check, pay a fine and back taxes, and learn English.

An important note in the legislation is, illegal immigrants will go to the back of the line for green cards behind those who have legally followed the process.

The eight senators have made it clear they don’t want to displace anyone who has already followed the law and is waiting in line.”

A new CBS poll shows 51% of Americans think illegal immigrants working in the U.S. should be able to stay and apply for citizenship.

A quarter of Americans think illegal immigrants now working here should be required to leave the country.
