BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - During the winter season, icicles are one thing many people need to look out for as they can be pretty dangerous.
They can cause injuries to people, as well as damage to homes and gutters due to how much some of them can weigh.
The key, is trying to assess if they are worth removing in the first place
The manager of Dibble True Value Hardware, William Devereaux says, "If they don't have a ladder that is high enough, then they should just consult a professional, especially when it comes to the roofs and gutters.
He also mentions that downspouts are a problem this time of year when they ice up, and get clogged; that's when the ice jams start.
Roofers and people that work with gutters are the ones you would want to call if you find yourself running into this problem. Make sure you work with a partner on a flat surface, and that you're far away enough so you won't get hit.
The most people can do is prevent icicles from injuring themselves, or damaging their homes. The more icicles a house has means the insulation is lacking.
Devereaux says there's many different materials people can buy such as ice shields, ice guards.
Either way however, everyone is always going to run into this problem during the winter months, espcially with the winters we have in western New York.
