CHEEKTOWAGA, NY (WIVB) - New York State Police investigated an accident that happened around 9 a.m. Sunday on the I-90 in Cheektowaga that caused a major backup.
Umaru Gabon of Los Angeles, California was operating a 2012 Freightliner, when he drove off the right shoulder of the I-90. He struck several sections of the guard rail and a concrete barrier before stopping under the thruway overpass at Exit 53.
Seneca Hose and Doyle Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene after the vehicle broke out in flames.
The driver and passenger escaped the truck before it started on fire but were transported to ECMC and treated for minor injuries.
Eastbound traffic was diverted at Exit 53 for approximately 2 hours as well as closing the right lane for a good portion of the day.
The cause of the accident was Gabon's error and he was ticketed for moving from the lane unsafely; no other vehicles were involved in the accident.
