ALBION, N.Y. (WIVB) - For some people, it's not too early to start thinking about Christmas and Santa Claus.

As you're about to see, St. Nick's professional history is linked to western New York.

More than three months early, Santas are kicking up their heels celebrating the legacy of this famous Santa. The man behind the beard longtime Albion resident, Charles Howard.

Charlie Howard began his professional Santa career at a Rochester area department store. Among those celebrating the recognition, several of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Howard's Granddaughter, Jane Holland said, "We're just so thrilled they are doing this tribute for my grandfather. He would be so pleased to see this happening."

Howard's history as a professional St. Nick brought him national attention. Back in 1948, he tapped to be Santa for the Macy's Parade in New York City. He wore the red suit for that event until 1965.

Luciano Spalla said, "I knew that man. I knew somebody that was on television. And then later on when he was the show "What's My Line," that was even better."

Santa's, Charlie Howard's memorabilia, from Santa suits to ornaments, can be viewed in a room at the converted Erie Canal school house, now a bed and breakfast in Albion. Charles W. Howard Day.

Event Coordinator Carol Culhan added, "The legacy that he left behind is tremendous. He put Albion on the map. Thousands of people came here to see Santa Claus and Christmas Park. To say nothing of the people who came here to learn how to be Santa, they got their education here."
