BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A fire in Genesee County destroyed a barn around 2:30 a.m. Sheriff’s deputies say a truck driver passing by saw the fire and called 911, he then went and knocked on the door to the house next to the barn, waking up the family.

Homeowner Brendan Carney said, “I woke up to the truck driver banging on the door and I ran down and he said the barns on fire, so I grabbed my daughter, my wife, two dogs and we came pouring out, that’s when you know just chaos obviously. This is a 44-foot barn and the flames were 40 plus feet, and my concern was obviously the house.”

The house never caught fire, but the homeowner says there was a lot of equipment in the barn that’s now gone, including a sailboat. There were also some chickens inside.

About seven fire companies responded, firefighters say lack of water was an issue and they have to go to nearby creeks to get some water. There’s still no word on the cause of the blaze.
