SOUTH BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - An ally of Congressman Brian Higgins and South Buffalo's Common Council member battled to fill Mark Schroeder's vacated Assembly seat. And just like a prize fight, there's only one person standing in the end.

Voters in Buffalo, Lackawanna, Orchard Park and West Seneca headed to the polls Tuesday to decide the special election. Mickey Kearns wound up beating Democratic nominee Chris Fahey, a protege of Congressman Brian Higgins. Kearns is a Democrat, but ran on the Republican ticket to get into the race for the 145th Assembly District.

In the end, Kearns won handily with 57 percent of the vote.
