Walk for kidney disease at the Zoo

BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) - Dozens of walkers laced up their sneakers to raise awareness about kidney disease by participating in the 5K Kidney Walk at  the Buffalo Zoo Sunday morning.

The walk is a non-competitive stroll aimed at raising funds for the National Kidney Foundation's local programs.

Megan Alchowiak, the National Kidney Foundation's Community Outreach Manager said that the organization selected the Buffalo Zoo for the location of the walk for an important reason, "The zoo helps lower blood pressure and two of the main risk factors for kidney disease is high blood pressure and diabetes so that was a great environment and people can just get to enjoy the animal today."

The National Kidney Foundation helps provide free screenings to those who are at high risk for developing kidney disease.
