ROCHESTER, NY -
Wegmans Supermakets have stopped selling two of its reusable shopping bags= the green pea and holiday 2009.
The company reports that preliminary testing on some of the bags suggest there may be elevated levels of lead. No other designs are affected.
"Customers can continue to safely use both of these designs. This is not a food safety or children's health concern," says Jo Natale, director of media relations. "The eventual disposal of the bags is the only issue, from an environmental perspective."
Signs have been posted in Wegmans stores to let customers know that the bags are safe to use, but should be returned to Wegmans prior to disposal. The bag will be replaced with another design.
