BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - It's the end of an era in Buffalo. The doors are closed for good at Millard Fillmore Gates Hospital.
Tuesday was an emotional day at Millard Fillmore Gates, as the last procedures were performed, and the last patients were moved out.
Registered Nurse Janet Wilkinson said, “It’s a bittersweet experience. It’s exciting to go someplace new, but it’s hard to leave something that you’ve known.”

Gino Nichele didn’t believe his doctor, when he found out he’d be the last surgical procedure at Gates.
Nichele said, “And I thought he was joking. But he was serious, Dr. Budney was serious. And he made all the arrangements.”
When Gates closes its doors, it marks the beginning of a new era.
Many of the employees will be working at the brand new $291 million vascular institute next the Buffalo General Medical Center, that will help transform Buffalo into a world class health care destination.
Registered Nurse Amber Drews said, “And we’re looking forward to taking our patients with us, continuity of care, that’s what we’re all about.”
