Wilson School District faces downsizing

WILSON, N.Y. (WIVB) - School districts around western New York are facing downsizing issues. In a Niagara County district, school officials say they have no other choice. Parents and teachers packed the Stevenson Elementary School in Ransomville Tuesday night, for the Wilson Central School board meeting.

School Board President Tim Kropp said, “There will be more cuts. We're not only faced with a financial crisis, we're faced with an enrollment crisis. We have lost approximately 130-140 students in the last three to four years."

Teachers spoke out against the cuts that could be made to afterschool programs, emphasizing the importance they have on a student’s future.

Kropp said, “hat you'll do, is you'll handcuff our kids for life. Our kids need those co-curriculars on their resumes for college applications, for jobs later down the road.”

The board says nothing is set in stone and they are hoping to make a final decision by December.

The Wilson Central School District is one of the many schools in the area looking to make ends meet. Ken Ton and school districts in Cheektowaga are also looking to consolidating schools next year.
