LOCKPORT, NY (WIVB) - The Lockport Sun Journal reports that town board members were presented with a petition on Wednesday night that included 8,000 signatures from people pleading for a Wegmans to be built in their city.

The group "We Want Wegmans" is asking the supermarket chain to build a store anywhere in eastern Niagara county.  They even have a website and Facebook page .

Town leaders say they have never seen a petition this large - the size of a phone book.  The board plans on making a formal presentation to Wegmans leaders to see what they can do to woo them to build in the eastern part of the county.   There is already a Wegmans in Niagara Falls, in the western part of Niagara County

Wegmans has 79 locations throughout New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Massachusetts.

Their first foray into the Buffalo-Niagara region was a Wegmans that opened in Cheektowaga in 1977, following the Blizzard of  '77
