ST. CATHARINES, ONT. (WIVB0 - Fort Erie and the Niagara Region are known for many great Chinese restaurants, but now those restaurants are facing a citizen protest against one of therir menu items- shark fin soup.

The Niagara Falls Review reports that Shark Allies Niagara has petitioned the the regional council to ban the sale of shark fins, shark cartilage pills and keeping sharks in captivity.

Here's a link to the group's Facebook page.

Shark fin bans are now in place in other Ontario metro areas including Toronto.

Shark Allies estimate 23 million to 73 million sharks a year are finned. They also claims the fishing process used to catch sharks tends to sweep up other species indiscriminately, including endangered ones.
