ROCHESTER, NY (WIVB) - A student at the Rochester Institute of Technology was badly burned after being sprayed with boiling water and steam from a broken pipe on campus.
The student is recovering from second-degree burns to her hands, neck and back. She was working at the campus convenience store on Sunday night when around 10 p.m. a hot water pipe near her burst at an expansion joint.
The student, who is not being identified, is from Ohio. She is recovering in the burn unit at Strong Memorial Hospital.
The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reports that due to the pipe problem and subsequent flooding students in the Nathaniel Rochester Hall won't have access to hot water until repairs are made. About 750 of those students will have no heat in their rooms.
