WNY to see 400-year old Wampum belts

Belts outline friendship and peace between nations

BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) - This weekend western New Yorkers have a a unique opportunity to see historic 400-year old Native American Wampum  belts in Buffalo and Irving.

As part of a statewide Two Row Wampum Renewal Campaign the belts will be on display and guests can learn about their history and Native American culture.

The display consists of three original Wampum Belts- Two Row, Hiawatha and the Covenant Chain -  as well as replicas of 65 other belts. 

Two presentations, both free and open to the public will take place on Mar. 16 and 17.

On Saturday, Mar. 16 guests are welcome to come to Native American Community Services, located at 1005 Grant Street in Buffalo.  Guests are welcome to stay for a potluck dinner and watch social dances from children with the Seneca Faithkeepers School.

On Sunday, Mar. 17 presentations will take place at the Cattaraugus Community Center,  12767 Route 438 in Irving from 1- 3 p.m.

Jake Edwards, a Chief of the Onondaga Nation and “Wampum Keeper” as well as Dr. Richard Harnell, from Monroe Community College will discuss the belts.
