WILSON, N.Y. (WIVB) - The Johnson family lost their home, their belongings and their daughter in a tragic explosion. The tragedy has many throughout western New York reaching into their pockets trying to give anything they can to help.
Wednesday night, 103.3 The Edge radio station raised money at their cruise night in North Tonawanda for the Johnson family.
Radio Announcer Ted Shredd said, "You know I think we'll be collecting for a couple weeks, you know, this story doesn't go away in a couple days."
Radio Announcer Tom Ragan said,"Not only that but they've lost everything, so I know when you've had a chance to see some of the actual footage.”
Ragan said, "It gives you an idea of how much was lost."
Almost 30 miles away from the Johnson's home, Coffee Culture in the Elmwood Village is donating every penny they make this week to the Johnson family, which could approach $10,000 by Sunday night.
"I think it's a great gesture and a really good thing to do,” said Davis Parisi, a Coffee Culture customer.
Another customer said, “I can do something. By buying something here, I can help."
At the First Baptist Church in Wilson, a whole room has been filled with clothing, for the family.
“And I think, at this point, the best way to help would be to donate money,” said Ida Mae Watters, of the First Baptist Church of Wilson.
The family is still being treated at ECMC Thursday morning. Katie is fighting for her life. She's in critical condition in the burn unit. Her parents, Jody and Judy, as well as her brother, Nathan, are in fair condition.
