WNYers take on new gun control laws

ALBANY, N.Y. (WIVB) - Western New Yorkers are heading to Albany to take on the new gun control laws, and Carl Paladino is leading the pack.

The bus was scheduled to leave the Southgate Plaza on Union Road in West Seneca at 6 a.m. Tuesday. They will arrive in Albany at 11 a.m. and stay until 4 p.m. before coming home again.

They are rallying against tougher gun laws in New York State, and targeting senate Republicans who voted for Governor Cuomo’s Safe Gun Act, like local senator Mark Grisanti. Grisanti is one of the 11 Republican state senators to side with Cuomo on harsher gun control.

The New York Safe Act passed on January 14th, after the mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut. The law includes a tougher assault weapons ban and stronger regulations on ammunition. Those heading to Albany say it violates the second amendment.

Attorney James Tresmond said, “It takes away the rights of law abiding gun owners who have done nothing, committed no crimes. And all of a sudden, because they earn certain weapons, they're going to be breaking the law.”

Assemblyman Sean Ryan said, “If you own that now qualifies under the assault weapons bill, you merely have to register it with the New York State Police every five years. Not an infringement, not a confiscation, no one's guns are now illegal.”
