Work underway at Grand Island bridge

GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) - There is going to be a traffic tie up for a few months, if you are traveling on the bridges that connect Grand Island and the Tonawandas. While construction crews work on the I-90 southbound bridge in the overnight hours, drivers may face delays.

Grand Island resident Susan Ganci said, “It was horrible. I mean, it's down to one lane, it's a hassle. You have people going on one side, people going on the other. It can cause a lot of accidents. Just not very fond of it.”

The I-90 southbound bridge from Grand Island to the Tonawandas will be closed overnight, from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays. The means all traffic will have to share the northbound bridge with one lane moving in each direction.

Grand Island resident Roy Reeves said, “You know, it's part of being on the island, I suppose. You need the bridge to get on and off.”

Construction crews are doing joint repairs, resurfacing on the deck and installing a new moveable barrier gate at the bridge’s base. Ganci said, “No, I'm not thrilled. Hopefully, it will be done with this year, because I don't want to deal with it again.”

Crews did the same work on the northbound bridge three years ago, many commuters remember the delays prolonged the project a few extra months.
