BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A local activist who dedicated her life to cleaning up her east side neighborhood has died.

Family members confirm Rosa Gibson passed away following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Gibson, an Alabama native, was best known for her work through her Community Action Information Center.

The organization maintained vegetable and flower gardens on vacant city lots and distributed the food to needy families.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown spoke with News 4 and issued a statement: "I am very saddened to hear of the passing of Rosa Gibson. She dedicated her life to advocating for our neighborhoods, she was a real champion of National Night Out and Crime Watch. She really beleived that residents should play a role in making their neighborhoods safer. Her passion and love for the City of Buffalo will be sorely missed."
