Hero's happy return was longtime coming

HAMBURG, N.Y. (WIVB) - Doctors once feared he would never walk or talk again, but now Marine Staff Sergeant John Stanz walked into the arms of his family at the Buffalo Niagara Airport. The wounded war hero is enjoying the warmth of home.

No one but Marine Staff Sergeant John Stanz can appreciate what it feels like to be home with his family in Hamburg.

"it feels great. Except of course for the weather, but that's just something you have to deal with," joked John.

He jokes, but there's no doubt this will be the best Christmas this large loving family has ever seen.

His mom Sandy said, "The best one ever... just unbelievable."

Stanz long trip home began when an I.E.D. exploded under his vehicle in Afghanistan August 15th. His critical injuries took him to hospitals in Germany and Bethesda and to a rehab center near Philadelphia.

Four months later, he was greeted as a real hero at the Buffalo airport.

"I don't need all this hubbub about me. I appreciate it, but I'm not hero. I just did my job," said John.

"All the prayers... it's been unbelievable. Sorry, it's just overwhelming," sobbed Sandy.

Sgt. Stanz suffered a traumatic brain injury and faces years of therapy. His parents' home requires extensive renovations to accommodate his needs, but for now, everyone's focusing on having John home for Christmas.

His dad John said, "He'll be the first one to tell you, 'I just did my job.' Well his job was pretty doggone dangerous and he did it really well."

"I just want to say, 'thank you' to everyone for supporting my family and myself. It means a lot to me. Thank you very much," said John.

Rus Thompson has organized a benefit for the Stanz family this Friday night, December 18th, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Tandoori's Palms Banquet Center at Sheridan and Transit in Williamsville. Ticket donations are $25.
