BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A local marine, who paid a painful price for freedom, is coming home. Marine Staff Sergeant John Stanz has come a long way from the front lines.
It's extraordinary to think how far Marine Staff Sergeant John Stanz has come. Only four months ago, doctors in a Philadelphia rehab facility feared he might never wake from a coma.
The Hamburg native is now walking, talking and ready to come home.
"He's a new brother and we're learning to accept a new brother. It's all about accepting," said his sister Stacy Waite.
We first met Stanz and his parents four years ago after he survived a bullet through his helmet in Iraq. After that injury, he continued his service until this past August.
Stanz was critically injured when an I.E.D. exploded under his military vehicle in Afghanistan; two of his buddies were killed.
His sisters recently met with News Four's Jacquie Walker.
His sister Amy Pavlovich said, "It was shocking. I couldn't believe we got the call or where we are today."
After extensive treatment in Philly, Stanz is now en route to WNY, along with his parents who never left his side. Here at home, his large family has been busy, raising money to meet his needs, knowing the challenges ahead are great.
Stanz suffered a traumatic brain injury.
"You know he believed in what he was doing. Even when we say, it's time to get out," said Stacy.
She added, "He was so dedicated and believed in what he was doing."
