Earl may disrupt Labor Day travel plans

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - The worst of Hurricane Earl has come and gone, but it's still affecting travel plans for some this holiday weekend.

Shelters are set up on the Cape and residents in their homes are being urged to stay there as they anticipate what's left of Earl to come ashore Friday night. Businesses and homes are boarded up, just in case.

One resident said, "I'd rather err on the side of caution than have the whole thing go."

And the storm is affecting travel plans for some. Hotels are experiencing cancellations.

"We have 26 rooms and we've had eight cancellations," said Gil Mucher of the Hawthorne Motel.

Meanwhile, airlines canceled some 200 flights and Amtrak suspended service between New York and Boston due to damage left behind from Hurricane Earl. And in Boston, the Red Sox vs. White Sox game was called off. But as Earl was losing steam, traffic on the Cape was increasing, a sign that most people intend to weather the storm and carry on with Labor Day weekend plans.

Constantin Papageorgiou said, "Hopefully it's back to the beach."

And in North Carolina, no damage or injuries were reported, but streets were flooded in parts of the outer banks. Earl dumped up to four and a half inches of rain and brought wind gusts of up to 78 miles-per-hour overnight.
