Six year old suspended over gun motion

MARYLAND (CNN) - A Maryland family is outraged after they say their six-year-old son was suspended, after making a shooting motion. Was it a harmless gesture or a menacing move?

In a letter, school officials described what happened as a serious incident, where the boy threatened to shoot a fellow student.

The family’s attorney says they are appealing the one-day suspension, calling it an overreaction. The incident happened just days after the Sandy Hook shooting.

Family attorney Robin Ficker said, “It is on his permanent record that he threatened to shoot a student, five years from now someone's going to look at that and this is a bad kid, he's been branded, he's been thrown under the bus."

Parent Carmen Long said, “I wouldn't expect someone to do that to my child and if they did I would expect some type of discipline."

The boy’s family wants his school record cleared and may ask for him to be sent to a different school.
