ALBANY, N.Y. (WIVB) - Victims families and the NTSB claim calls to the FAA to toughen safety standards have fallen on deaf ears.

The NTSB says history has repeated itself time and time again at the expense of lives. Family members and lawmakers say it's time for the FAA to beef up the oversight of regional air carriers. New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced legislation to require the FAA to implement the NTSB recommendations.

"Impose the standards, give them no discretion, and then give them the kind of support they need to implement. If the FAA needs more resources, they need more personnel, then that will be combined with the bill. But they have to implement these recommendations," said Senator Gillibrand.

Senator Gillibrand is an original sponsor of legislation to increase minimum flight time requirements and requiring the FAA to address regional aircraft safety and test failures.
