ALBANY, N.Y. (WIVB) - New York's embattled Governor is officially a "lame duck." David Paterson ended his election campaign in the midst of a domestic violence scandal and possible cover-up involving a top aide.
Paterson said, "Today I am announcing that I am ending my campaign for Governor of the State of New York."
Scandal has brought down the Paterson campaign. David Johnson, a top aide to the Governor, is the focus of a domestic violence scandal. The New York Times reports that the Governor and State Police had direct contact with the woman who was asking for an order of protection. She never showed up in court.
"I am looking forward to a full investigation of actions taken by myself and my administration, but I give you this personal oath. I have never abused my office, not now, not ever," said Paterson.
State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo will spearhead the investigation into the allegations. Cuomo is now considered the top Democratic candidate for Governor. Buffalo's Mayor Byron Brown has been mentioned as a possible running mate, but wouldn't talk about that.
"My focus, my mission, every single day, is to make sure Buffalo's needs are known," said Brown.
President Obama has urged Paterson to step aside even before this scandal broke and the White House believe he's doing the right thing.
White House spokesperson Robert Gibbs said, "I think it's safe to say that anybody that read these articles believe at a minimum that he made the right decision about his re-election."
With $16 million already in his campaign war chest, Cuomo says he'll announce his future plans at the appropriate time.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Lazio is calling on the Attorney General to reveal whether he or any of his agents leaked information to the media about the scandal that ended Paterson's campaign.
