WASHINGTON, D.C. (WIVB) - The smoldering debate over collecting taxes on Indian cigarettes is heating up, now that the Seneca Nation of Indians is taking their case to a higher power.
Tribal leaders from the six Iroquois Nations have decided to write to President Obama, urging him to intervene on the state collecting taxes on cigarette sales. The state plans to start collecting taxes on September 1st. Past attempts to collect taxes ignited fiery protests.
