Six children die in burning home

Five other people did escape from home

WASHINGTON COUNTY, N.Y. (WIVB) - Tragically, rescue efforts weren't successful in New York's Capital Region over the weekend.

Monday morning, fire investigators are trying to determine what sparked the fire that killed six children.

Officials say the victims were between the ages of one and 12.

Five other people, including a young boy, did escape from the burning Washington County home.

Firefighters are now preparing to head back into the home, which they say is a dangerous task.

"The building right now is very unstable. We need teams to come in and sure up the floors, shore up the roof, rafters and whatnot. So they can safely operate in the environment for an investigation," said William Cook of the Fort Edward Fire Department. "They don't get any worse than that. Even without fatality. This was a bad fire."

Investigators say it's unclear how many people were actually living in the home, and whether it had any working smoke detectors.
