NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WIVB) - Can you imagine western New York as a solar energy hub?

That vision has brought Governor David Paterson to the Cataract City Monday morning.

We're talking about the producing of silicon in Niagara Falls.

Governor Paterson believes that this investment will help make New York a national leader in the development of clean energy.

The Governor took some precious time away from dealing with the state's $3 billion deficit, to announce the reopening of Globe Specialty Metals in Niagara Falls.

Globe produces a purified form of silicon used in solar panels to convert sunlight into electricity. Now, Globe is getting low-cost hydropower and $25 million in empire zone benefits. The company is investing $60 million and will create some 500 jobs. So far, 138 jobs have been created.

The governor said New York is now poised to attract high-tech clean energy companies to the state, because of silicon production.
