Greek yogurt may be school lunch staple

BATAVIA, N.Y. (WIVB) - School lunches across the country could soon be going Greek, which could add up to a lot of green for New York State.

Senator Charles Schumer says a pilot program will put more Greek yogurt in schools by this April. If it's a hit, it could spread nationwide. Upstate New York is home to several Greek yogurt plants. Alpina Foods opened one in Batavia just four months ago and these plants buy tons of milk from local dairy farmers.

Senator Schumer said, "It'll give another shot in the arm to jobs on our dairy farms, jobs in our Greek yogurt factories and for our kids to have really good food."

Greek yogurt is packed with protein and typically has half the amount of sodium as standard yogurt.
