BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - The Western New York Land Conservancy has received $317,000 to study and inventory the Niagara County portion of the geologically significant Niagara Escarpment.
The conservancy says the escarpment, which formed at the edge of an ancient sea, contains some of the best exposures of 500 million-year-old fossils in the world. Erosion along the escarpment is responsible for the gorge at Niagara Falls.
The land conservancy study is intended to identify and prioritize restoration and conservation needs.
The funding announced Wednesday comes from the Niagara Greenway Commission's Ecological Standing Committee.
