Victims' families concerned about road

LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WIVB) - There's an outpouring of support for two teenagers struck by a suspected drunk driver in Lockport.

Many people at Thursday night’s vigil say they are concerned about the stretch of road, where the two teen boys were struck last week.

Lockport residents say something needs to change on the stretch of Dysinger Road.

The victim’s grandmother Patricia Palmer said, “So many accidents, so many people getting hurt, it’s getting to be ridiculous.”

Last week, two teen boys, who were walking along the road at night, were struck by an alleged drunk driver.

Police say the driver is at fault, but residents also blame the road.

“I think there needs to be more lighting. This is a very dark place when you come through here at nighttime. Sidewalks, they do have enough space for walking,” said Palmer.

Palmer says her grandson was one of the teens struck by Amy Schumacher’s car.

A week after the tragic accident, Patricia says 14-year-old Anthony San Marco is in a coma, clinging to life at ECMC.

Palmer said, “We talk to him and he squeezes our hand like he knows that we’re there. But he’s not opening his eyes. He doesn’t look at us.”

Palmer said, “He plays football. He loves football, he’s got some of his little friends that he played football with here. You know he gets along with a lot of people. A lot of girls like him too.”

Palmer says she has faith that Anthony will pull through.

Elizabeth Scufelt’s son is recovering from the accident. “I’m very grateful. Because my son is standing here and Anthony is still in the hospital, so it’s very heartbreaking to me.”

Thirteen-year-old son Christian Scufelt joined supporters Thursday night, at the same spot where tragedy struck.

Police say the alleged drunk driver was also texting behind the wheel, when she struck two teens.
